Statistics show that there has been some slight growth in the number of nominations that have gone to women. This year, women have 27.5 of the total noms while last year the percentage was 26.8.
However meager the growth is, it is positive considering the fact that there has been gradual increase in the number of females who are active in the world of filmmaking and cinema.
A total of Sixty two females have been picked to compete for an Oscar in non-gender specific categories in competition.
According to a media report female directors could not gain a slot in best director category of the event regardless of how deserving the films they have made have been. Among many, one of the female filmmakers whose absence in this category is gravely felt is Lynne Ramsay and most praised film ‘You were Never Really Here’ which was the recipient of Cannes screenplay award.
