‘Slaughter’ on screen at London Kurdish fest

Iranian short ‘Slaughter’ is competing at London Kurdish Film Festival in UK.

Award-winning Iranian short film ‘Slaughter’ is being screened at the London Kurdish Film Festival (LKFF) in the UK.

Co-directed by Ako Zand-Karimi and Saman Hosseinpour, the social flick has joined the competition program of the British event’s 11th edition.

‘Slaughter’ narrates the story of a small village family whose life depends on their one and only cow. They are in fact very fond of the animal; however, it must be sold to help the family live through a rough winter.

The family’s son, saddened by this decision, lets the cow escape to prevent its dark destiny.

The short title was internationally premiered at the 2018 Early Bird International Student Film Festival in Bulgaria.

It has also been screened at various global events, including the Lecce Film Festival in Italy, the International Student Film and Video Festival in China, the International Independent Film Festival-Publicystyka in Poland and the Film Fest Sundsvall in Sweden.

Here is a list of some festivals, in which the film won honors:

Asian Cinematography Awards (ACA) in the Philippines

Villammare Film Festival in Italy

Parma Music Film Festival in Italy

Launched in 2001, the biennial LKFF aims to be “a powerful and influential form of artistic expression and one which carries great importance for Kurds” and “a tool for emancipation and self-expression”, according to the event’s official website.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s edition of the event is being held online since August 15 and it is to wrap up on August 24.
